Description

Milestone located west of West Woodside, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, was created for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters that read "CARLISLE 8 MILES, COCKERMOUTH 17½ MILES." The stone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. There is also an Ordnance Survey bench mark on the top of the stone.
