Description

This milestone, located on the north side of the former A595 in Boltons, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was erected for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters indicating the distances to Carlisle (13 miles), Wigton (3 miles), and Cockermouth (12½ miles). The stone is whitewashed, and the lettering is highlighted in black. Additionally, there is an Ordnance Survey bench mark on the top of the stone.
