Description

This milestone dates from the late 18th or early 19th century and was originally situated on the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is constructed of red sandstone with a cast-iron plate affixed to the front. The stone has a rounded top with a curved face, and the plate displays raised lettering indicating distances: "CARLISLE 6 MILES," "WIGTON 5 MILES," and "COCKERMOUTH 20½ MILES." It is whitewashed with the lettering highlighted in black. An Ordnance Survey bench mark is located on the top of the stone.
