Description
Greenwood Cottage is a house that likely dates from the mid-17th century, with an 18th-century extension and 19th-century alterations. It features whitewashed clay walls that have been raised in height with clay, while the extension is made of whitewashed sandstone rubble. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and there are brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays, with a two-storey, two-bay extension at a right angle to the rear and a kitchen lean-to on the left. The front has a 20th-century door in a brick surround and 20th-century windows also in brick surrounds. To the left, there is an original fire window with a chamfered painted stone surround. The rear of the cottage has two plank doors in painted stone surrounds and features two-pane sash windows in painted stone surrounds. Inside, there is a stone heck post and partition with an original fire beam, and possibly the remains of a fire hood. A settle-back, which is now removed to the cellar, is dated 1659. The cottage is listed partly for its group value with Greenwood House.
