Description

This milestone, located east of Wigton, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was erected for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front that displays raised letters indicating the distances: CARLISLE 10 MILES, WIGTON 1 MILE, COCKERMOUTH 16½ MILES. The milestone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
