Description

This is a milestone located east of Aldersceugh, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It was created for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. The milestone is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. It has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters indicating distances: CARLISLE 16 MILES, WIGTON 6 MILES, and COCKERMOUTH 9½ MILES. The stone is whitewashed, and the lettering is highlighted in black.
