Description
Newbiggin Grange is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, although it incorporates earlier foundations. The building features whitewashed rubble walls set on large projecting plinth stones, topped with a graduated greenslate roof and yellow brick chimney stacks. It stands two storeys high and has three bays, with a single bay that is now a garage to the right and a lower two-bay extension to the left. The front includes a 20th-century door beneath a glazed fanlight, along with sash windows, all framed in painted stone surrounds. The garage has a 20th-century opening and a louvred window above. The extension features a plank door and sash windows, one located in a partly blocked loft doorway, all also in painted stone surrounds. The rear walls are rendered. This grange was associated with the Priory of St Mary in Carlisle, and the plinth may be remnants of a medieval building linked to the grange.
