Description
Boltongate War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, located in the churchyard of All Saints Church in Boltongate, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned by the churchyard wall and the path leading to the church. The memorial features a wheel-head Celtic cross with knot work carving at the head, mounted on a wide shaft that tapers into a four-sided plinth. The shaft and plinth display an inscription commemorating those who served in the First World War. Additionally, a low stone block with a slate plaque has been added at the base to honor those who fought in the Second World War.
The inscription reads: (NAMES)// TO THE UNDYING MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ “WHO STANDS IF FREEDOM FALL ?/ WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVES ?”// (slate plaque in front:) IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ THEY FOUGHT AND DIED FOR US.
