Description

This milestone, located on the west side of the former A595, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was created for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front that displays raised letters indicating distances: CARLISLE 18 MILES, WIGTON 8 MILES, and COCKERMOUTH 7½ MILES. The milestone has been whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
