Description

This milestone, located south-west of Kirkland Green, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was created for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters indicating distances: CARLISLE 17 MILES, WIGTON 7 MILES, and COCKERMOUTH 8½ MILES. The stone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
