Description
This milestone, located north-east of Micklethwaite, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was created for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters that read "CARLISLE 8 MILES, WIGTON 3 MILES, COCKERMOUTH 18½ MILES." The milestone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
