Description
Milestone located east of Newby Cross Farm, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, was erected for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters indicating distances: CARLISLE 3 MILES, WIGTON 8 MILES, and COCKERMOUTH 23½ MILES. The milestone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
