Description

Bunkershill Centre House, located on the north side of Orton Road in Carlisle, is a house and stables that have been converted into three dwellings. It was likely built around 1797 for John Milbourn. The building features painted rendered walls set on a chamfered painted plinth, with raised V-jointed quoins, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. The roof is a graduated greenslate hipped roof, which is hidden by the parapet, and there are rendered chimney stacks.

Originally, the structure was two storeys with eight bays, but it has been altered to include eleven bays, with the three bays on the right previously being a blank wall for stables, now fitted with matching 20th-century windows. The central entrance has a 20th-century door framed by an eared architrave, flanked by sidelights and topped with a moulded triangular pediment. There are two 19th-century canted bay windows, while the remaining windows are single-pane sashes set in painted stone architraves. To the far left, there is a 20th-century door leading to the former servants' quarters, now known as the West End. A 20th-century door is also present in the end wall on the right, which leads to the East End, previously the stables. The centre rear of the building has a different roofline, featuring two storeys and four bays, with 20th-century windows. Historical records indicate that this site may have been home to an earlier house, with deeds dating back to 1770 in the County Record Office.
