Description
This is a house dating to the 1840s, built in Carlisle. Constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, it features light-coloured brick headers on a chamfered stone plinth. The corners are emphasised by V-jointed quoins, and it has a continuous sill band and eaves cornice. The roof is covered in graduated greenslate, with brick chimney stacks at the ends. The house was originally intended as the beginning of a terrace, but the remaining houses were built later in a different style.
It is two storeys high with two bays, and has a two-bay return on Cromwell Crescent, extending with a lower two-bay addition. The front door is panelled and sits within an Ionic porch. The ground floor windows are sash windows with margin lights, set within stone architraves. Upper floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, also in stone architraves. Surviving external fitments for cloth blinds, including clips to hold them away from the windows, are present on the ground floor windows – a feature unique in Carlisle and typical of the Victorian period.
Inside, the house has panelled internal doors and shutters. A white marble fireplace is in the principal room, complemented by moulded plaster ceiling cornices.
