Description

Two houses, located at the end of a terrace in Etterby Street, Carlisle, were built in the 1840s. Number 6 is slightly later than Number 8. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond and English garden wall bond brickwork, resting on chamfered stone plinths. Number 6 has a Welsh slate roof, while Number 8 has a graduated greenslate roof; shared brick chimney stacks rise from the ridge.

Number 6 has three bays and features a central panelled door with an overlight, all within a stone surround. A right-hand segmental brick arch provides access for carriages. The windows are sash windows set within brick reveals, with stone sills and flat brick arches. Number 8 has two bays, with a central panelled door and a radial patterned fanlight in a stone surround that includes a false key and impost block. This house's sash windows are also set in brick reveals, with flat brick arches and stone sills. A shutter hinge bracket block is visible on the right-hand ground-floor window. An oriel bay window has been inserted on the right-hand side. The interior of the properties has not been inspected. These houses do not appear on the 1840 tithe map.
