Description

Two houses, numbers 18 and 20, form part of a terrace in Etterby Street, Carlisle. Constructed in the 1830s, the houses have painted stucco walls, with incised detailing on number 20, set upon a chamfered plinth. The roofs are slate, with Welsh and graduated greenslate on number 20, and the end chimney stacks are largely rebuilt in brick.

The houses are two storeys high and two bays wide, appearing as a mirrored pair. Steps lead to 20th-century doors and overlights, which are set within painted stone surrounds, flanking a central rusticated segmental carriage arch containing double plank doors. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals, and have painted stone sills. The interiors remain uninspected. The houses are depicted on the 1840 tithe map, demonstrating their early presence in the area.
