Description
This milestone, located outside Suttle House, dates from the early 19th century and was originally part of the Carlisle to Cockermouth turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a rounded top and a curved face, which was previously whitewashed. A rectangular metal plate is attached to the front, inscribed in six lines: "CARLISLE 2 MILES / WIGTON 9 MILES / COCKERMOUTH 24 1/2 MILES." The plate was once painted but is now rusted.
