Description
Suttle House is a house built in the late 18th century, with later alterations and additions. It features handmade brickwork in Flemish bond and has a graduated greenslate roof that is hipped on the extension, along with end brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys tall and has three bays, with a single-bay extension that faces left. The off-centre panelled door is set in a stone surround, with all dressings made of painted stone, and is sheltered by a Tuscan porch. On either side of the doorway are sidelights, and to the right is a tripartite window. Above the door are sash windows framed by stone architraves. The extension slightly projects and includes a ground floor Venetian window with a tripartite window above it. The left return features a Venetian window and sash windows also in stone architraves.
Inside, the house retains much original detail, including panelled doors in wooden architraves and internal panelled shutters. A drawing in the Cumbria County Record Office shows the house in the early 19th century with the doorway positioned centrally. The house does not appear on the 1770-1 map but is marked on Greenwood's Map of Cumberland from 1823 as the residence of George Blamire.
