Description
Morton Cottage is a house that was once a farmhouse, with an adjoining barn. It dates from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The walls are cement-rendered and sit on a chamfered plinth, featuring painted stone dressings, V-jointed quoins, and a rusticated pilaster, along with an eaves cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with graduated greenslate, and there are cement-rendered chimney stacks at the ends and ridge. The barn is constructed of painted brick and has a local slate roof, with a red brick stack added in the 19th century.
The building has two storeys and consists of seven bays with a double span, alongside a lower two-storey, single bay on the right, which includes two additional single-storey bays. The left five bays of the house feature a central panelled door with a radial fanlight, set within a pilastered porch topped by a lion. There is a left Venetian squared bay window with a stepped dentilled cornice, while the other windows are sashes with glazing bars set in stone architraves. The right end has two projecting bays, featuring a ground-floor Venetian window and sash windows in stone architraves. The right extension includes a panelled door in a stone surround, casement windows with glazing bars, and sash windows above.
The cottage is marked as Morton Cottage on Hodskinson & Donalds' Map of Cumberland, which was surveyed between 1770 and 1771.
