Description

The disused Mortuary Chapel, formerly a nonconformist chapel for Carlisle cemetery, was built between 1855 and 1856 by Messrs JM & J Hay of Liverpool. It features Flemish bond red brick on a moulded plinth, with all dressings made of calciferous sandstone. The chapel has flush stone quoins, a sill band, buttresses, and an eaves cornice. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with graduated greenslate, with coped gables, kneelers, and finials; the vents have been removed and replaced with slates. There are ashlar and brick chimney stacks on the slope of the roof.

The small chapel is aligned north-south and has a south door that faces another chapel, an east porch, and a south open bell cote. The south entrance features double plank doors with scrolled wrought-iron hinge brackets, set in a pointed arch of two orders, flanked by paired lancet side lights under a continuous hoodmould with carved-head label stops. The porch has a similar doorway. The windows include two-light cusped-headed designs and a four-light traceried window on the north side, all covered with 20th-century mesh.

Inside, the chapel has an open timber roof and a decorative pattern of red and black floor tiles. While the fitments and fittings remain, they have been moved from their original locations.
