Description
No. 153 and Carlisle Cemetery Office is a curator's house and cemetery offices built between 1855 and 1856 by Messrs JM & J Hay of Liverpool. The building features Flemish bond brickwork set on a chamfered plinth, with all dressings made of calciferous sandstone, flush quoins, and a modillioned eaves cornice. It has steeply-pitched roofs covered with graduated greenslate, coped gables, and cross finials, along with ashlar and brick chimney stacks at the ridge and ends.
The structure consists of a 2-storey, single-bay house and a single-storey, 4-bay office. The house (No. 153) has a gabled projection with a squared ground-floor bay that includes triple mullioned windows and a similar 2-light window above, all featuring pointed-headed lights. The doorway to the house has a plank door with a chamfered stone surround and a depressed pointed head. To the right of the house is a large pointed through-archway beneath a gable. The office range to the right of the arch is lower and has an off-centre plank door in a surround similar to that of the house doorway, along with 2- and 4-light mullioned windows with pointed heads. The rear of the archway gable displays a clock face with Roman numerals. The interiors have not been inspected.
