Description

This textile mill at Holme Head Works was constructed in 1865, with extensions added in 1907 and 1913 for Ferguson Brothers. It is built of brick with brick pilasters and angle detailing, featuring a dentil brick cornice. The building has a flat roof largely obscured from ground level, and a hipped slate roof on a prominent tower. The main rectangular mill is four storeys high, with 14 bays and returns, alongside a tower rising two stories above the main building. Most windows are steel casements with glazing bars set in brick reveals, all with flat brick arches. The 1907 tower housed a 7,500-gallon water tank, and the four northern bays are constructed of differently coloured brick, believed to have been added in 1913. The mill interior contains concrete floors and cast-iron columns, as detailed in previous listing descriptions. Plans for the water tank are held at Cumbria County Record Office. An 1854 drawing indicates there was a previous factory building on this site.
