Description

Holme Head House is a manager's house, now used as offices, built in the mid-19th century for the Ferguson Brothers factory. The building features English garden wall bond brickwork on a chamfered plinth, with all dressings made of painted stone, including a sill band and eaves cornice. It has a hipped, overhanging slate roof, with rows of small mill wheels under the eaves at each angle and original ridge brick chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high with three bays and two-bay returns, featuring a central entry stair and a double-depth plan. The central entrance has a panelled door with an overlight, accessed by steps and set within a pilastered porch. There are canted bay windows on either side of the entrance, and the upper floor has sash windows in stone architraves, with the bays flanking the door projecting slightly for full height. The right return has windows also in stone architraves. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records indicate that a plan of the factory complex from 1865 does not show a house in this location, nor is it depicted on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map, but it does appear on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map.
