Description
The monument to Peter Nicholson was built between 1855 and 1856 for subscribers and designed by Robert William Billings, an illustrator and architect. It is made of calciferous sandstone ashlar and features a tall triangular shaft on a stepped chamfered plinth with a cornice that is coved at the angles. The shaft tapers to an off-set spire. The inscription on the shaft reads: "PETER NICHOLSON, ARCHITECT, AUTHOR OF THE ARCHITECTURAL DICTIONARY AND OTHER WORKS OF MERIT. BORN AT PRESTONKIRK JULY 20 1765, DIED AT CARLISLE JUNE 18 1844." It is noted that he was actually buried at Christ Church in Carlisle. Further details about the monument were published in the Carlisle Patriot in 1855, and a photograph appeared in the Cumberland News in 1954.
