Description

This is a late 18th-century house on Abbey Street, Carlisle. It has painted incised stucco on a chamfered plinth, with painted V-jointed quoins. The roof is of graduated greenslate, and there are 19th-century end brick chimney stacks.

The house is two storeys high and has a double-depth plan with four bays. An off-centre panelled door, leading to steps, is set within an open pedimented doorcase with a block entablature and panelled reveals, and is topped with a radial fanlight. Sash windows with glazing bars are set in plain reveals, with stone sills and flat arches. The basement has speared railings which extend up to the front door.

The interior retains many original details, including panelled doors in fluted doorcases, and internal panelled shutters on both floors. There are moulded plaster ceiling cornices and central roundels in the principal rooms. One room features an alcove recess. A cantilever wooden staircase has patterned and scrolled balusters and a moulded wooden handrail. Black and white marble fireplaces are in the principal rooms, and other original cast-iron fireplaces are found in the bedrooms and cellar. A round-headed stair window has flanking niches.
