Description
Herbert Atkinson House is a late 18th-century building that was recently used as a teachers' centre. It features Flemish bond brickwork with light headers on a chamfered stone plinth, along with painted stone dressings, a string course, and an eaves cornice. The roof is made of Welsh slate, and there is a 19th-century brick chimney stack at the right end. The house is two storeys high and has five bays, arranged around a central staircase plan.
The central entrance has a panelled door with a radial fanlight, framed by a pilastered surround that includes imposts and keystones. To the right, there is a panelled through-passage door with a glazed fanlight in a similar surround. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in brick reveals and feature stone sills and false keystones in flat brick arches. Above the entrance, there is a stone inscription that reads "Herbert Atkinson House." Inside, there are some original doors that have been covered with modern fascias, and panelled built-in cupboards can be found in the rear upper floor rooms. The original wooden staircase has shaped tread ends and a moulded handrail, while moulded plaster ceiling cornices with a roundel are present in a first-floor room.
The house was purchased on 6 November 1934 by Carlisle Corporation, thanks to the efforts of Councillor Herbert Atkinson, which is how it got its name. It was opened as an education centre on 14 June 1965.
