Description

28 and 30 Abbey Street are two houses built in the late 18th century, located in Carlisle. They feature painted Flemish bond brickwork set on a chamfered plinth, with all dressings made of painted stone. The houses have a stone-bracketed metal gutter and a graduated greenslate roof, which includes a left coped gable and kneeler. There are chimney stacks from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

The buildings are two storeys tall under a common roof, with No. 28 having two bays and No. 30 having four bays. Both houses have off-centre panelled doors topped with radial fanlights in an open pedimented doorcase. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set in brick reveals with stone sills and flat brick arches. Notably, the ground floor right window of No. 28 is a 20th-century bowed window within the original 18th-century window opening.

Inside No. 30, there are panelled shutters, a wooden hall archway with a panelled soffit, and a wooden staircase featuring squared balusters and a moulded wooden handrail. The principal ground-floor room has a recessed alcove and a moulded plaster ceiling cornice. The owner of No. 30 states that these two houses were originally one, and that No. 28 had a Victorian staircase added when the division occurred.
