Description

36 and 38 Abbey Street are a pair of houses dating from the early 19th century. They are built of calciferous sandstone ashlar, set on a chamfered plinth, with a bracketed cornice. Return walls demonstrate Flemish bond brickwork with light-colored headers. The roof is slate-covered and not visible from the street, with brick chimney stacks at each end. The houses are arranged over three and a half storeys with a double-depth plan, and consist of two bays each. The central entrance features a panelled door with an overlight within an eared stone architrave. Sash windows are set within eared stone architraves; those on the upper floors are tripartite. The interior retains numerous original features, including moulded plaster ceiling cornices with central roundels and panelled doors. Blocked basement windows are also present.
