Description
No. 24 Abbey Street is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is built of calciferous sandstone ashlar on a red sandstone plinth, featuring a sill band and eaves cornice. The roof is covered with 20th-century tiles, and there is a 19th-century brick chimney stack at the gable. The house has two storeys and two bays. There are steps leading up to a left-side panelled door, which is topped by a radial fanlight and framed by a fluted pilastered surround with false imposts and a keystone. A railed cellar void with steps leads down to a cellar door. To the right, there is a through-passage with a projecting right-angle screen wall made of rendered brick. The windows are sash style with glazing bars set in stone architraves, and there are internal panelled shutters on the ground floor. The interior is largely unaltered, featuring panelled doors and walls, cornice mouldings, and a fine staircase, although it was unoccupied at the time of the survey.
