Description
Orton Park is a house, originally named Hylton Castle, dating primarily from the 1830s and built for Sir Wastel Brisco for his son, Hylton Brisco. A mid-19th century extension was later added. The house is constructed of stucco on a chamfered plinth, with angle pilasters, a string course, and a central parapet. The roof is slate with coped gables, and it features ashlar chimney stacks. The main block consists of two storeys and seven bays, with a lower, two-storey extension of five bays. A six-panel door is set within a painted stone architrave, flanked by a pilaster and entablature doorcase, and surmounted by an Ionic porch with fluted columns. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set in painted stone sills. The right-hand end wall of the extension is slate hung. At the rear, full-height pilasters are placed between each window, and the eaves feature a heavily modillioned and dentilled cornice. Inside, a moulded plaster ceiling from the early 19th century is found in the main hall. A cantilever stone staircase of square plan has wrought-iron decorative balusters and a wooden handrail. A principal ground floor room also contains a similar moulded plaster ceiling.
