Description

Tempest Tower Farmhouse and Folly Tower is a farmhouse and folly tower built in the mid-19th century, with the tower dated 1875 and inscribed with "TEMPEST TOWER" and "RUTH SIBSON," along with a further weathered inscription panel on the rear. The farmhouse features Flemish bond brickwork with pale stretchers and rusticated stone quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof and yellow brick chimney stacks. The house is two stories tall and has three bays, with a set-back extension to the right that is also two stories and two bays. The tower rises four stories and is constructed of red and calciferous mixed sandstone ashlar, with brick at the rear and cement rendered sides, and its roof is hidden by a battlemented parapet.

The main entrance to the house is a four-panel door with a radial fanlight set within a round-headed brick arch, flanked by Ionic columns in antis. The house has two-pane sash windows with flat brick arches and stone sills, while the extension features one 20th-century window, with the other sash windows retaining their glazing bars. The tower has a large round entrance leading to the farmyard, also with Ionic columns in antis, and round-headed narrow windows on each floor, along with smaller flanking stair windows. The adjoining outbuildings are noted as being of no interest.
