Description

Old Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse that was formerly a vicar's tower house, likely built in the early 14th century with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The tower features rubble and dressed red sandstone walls with a chamfered plinth and includes some stones of Roman origin from the nearby Roman Wall. The 19th-century gabled slate roof complements the structure. An 18th-century brick extension has undergone extensive alterations and additions in the mid-19th century, using dressed red sandstone, a slate roof, and brick chimney stacks.

The tower is two storeys high and consists of a single bay, with a large projecting angle buttress on the left side, necessary due to the steep slope of the land. The ground floor has a small square window with a 20th-century casement to the left, and a small filled lancet window with a round head above. The right end wall features a filled entrance with a chamfered and shouldered lintel, and there are remains of a newel staircase within the wall thickness.

To the right, there is a two-storey, three-bay extension that includes casements and sashes with glazing bars. A central projecting single-storey, single-bay extension has a sloping slate roof. The entrance front appears to be from the mid-19th century, showcasing a slightly projecting end bay of the original tower. A projecting porch/staircase features a 20th-century glazed door, and the façade includes both small and large casements with glazing bars. The farmhouse is situated on a defensively advantageous site next to the medieval church. The listing does not include the other farm buildings.
