Description
Milestone located south of Nealhouse Farm, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, was made for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is constructed from red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters indicating distances: CARLISLE 5 MILES, WIGTON 6 MILES, and COCKERMOUTH 21½ MILES. The stone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black. There is an Ordnance Survey bench mark on the top of the stone.
