Description

Greenhill Lodge Hotel is a house converted into a hotel, built between 1810 and 1815. It is constructed of red sandstone ashlar, featuring channeling on the ground floor, a string course, a cornice, and angle pilasters set on a chamfered plinth. The building has a graduated hipped slate roof with a stone chimney stack and stands two storeys tall with seven bays.

The entrance features glazed panelled doors beneath a glazed fanlight, flanked by sidelights, all within a stepped tetrastyle Doric porch supported by half-fluted columns. The raised central bay includes a tripartite window surrounded by fluted pilasters. The building has sash windows with glazing bars set in plain reveals. To the left, there is a 20th-century side door under a radial fanlight in a fluted pilaster surround. The ground floor windows are mostly sashes with glazing bars, all within stone surrounds. The rear of the building contains sash windows, including two tripartite windows, a staircase window with radial glazing bars, and some 20th-century windows. There is a lower single-bay extension to the right.

Inside, the hotel features mahogany panelled doors in heavily-moulded architraves. The hall door has a broad architrave with flanking niches. Several rooms have dentilled cornices, while those adjacent to the hall boast moulded plaster ceilings with central medallions. A semicircular cantilever staircase is present, featuring turned and carved balusters and a moulded handrail. The side doorways leading to the passages have panelled soffits supported by plaster figures.
