Description

Milestone located east of Red Dial, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, was erected for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters that read "CARLISLE 11 MILES" and "COCKERMOUTH 14½ MILES." The milestone is whitewashed, with the lettering highlighted in black.
