Description
South Grange is a farmhouse and extension that has been converted into a private house and garage. The original structure dates from the mid-17th century and is built of red sandstone rubble, with an upper storey of brick beneath a sandstone slate roof featuring a small octagonal chimney stack. An extension, dated and inscribed over the entrance as R.M. 1835, is constructed of hammer-dressed red sandstone, complete with a string course and flush quoins on a chamfered plinth.
The original house is two storeys high and has two bays, although it now functions as a garage. The two-storey, two-bay extension projects to the right. The current house features a 20th-century door set in a Tudor arch beneath a hood mould within a gabled porch. There are tall, two-light stone-mullioned windows under hood moulds. The former house has two small fire windows with chamfered surrounds, a similar two-light window, and an enlarged 18th-century window, all of which are now blocked. The upper floor has blocked stone-mullioned windows that are original but have been reset in a brick wall. The rear wall includes 20th-century garage doors.
