Description
The Vicarage is a vicarage built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It features painted ashlar stonework with pilastered quoins set on a rusticated plinth. The roof is made of graduated greenslate, and there are painted ashlar chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays, with an additional bay to the right under a common roof.
The entrance consists of a top-glazed four-panel door beneath a glazed fanlight, situated within an Ionic porch. The central window, which was originally the main entrance, has been moved to the right due to the construction of the extension. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, while the extension includes tripartite sash windows with glazing bars. Notably, the end wall features a sculptured Roman stone figure that was brought from the Old Carlisle Roman Fort. For a depiction of the building before the extension was added, refer to Melvyn Bragg's "Speak for England," published in 1976.
