Description
Thomlinson Junior School is a building that was originally a house called The Flosh, later known as Westmorland House, and has been converted into a school. It dates from the late 18th century and underwent significant alterations between 1800 and 1807, carried out by John Westmorland, with further extensions added in 1898 by Oliver and Dodgson. The weathered inscription and date of 1730 refer to an earlier school located on Market Hill.
The building features Flemish bond brickwork with V-jointed quoins set on a chamfered plinth. It has a graduated greenslate roof with ashlar chimney stacks. The original house is two storeys high with five bays and a three-bay extension to the right, all under a common roof. To the far right, there is a T-shaped school extension made of red brick, which is three storeys tall.
The entrance has a 20th-century door set within a prostyle Doric porch that includes a triglyph and metope frieze beneath a dentilled cornice. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, framed in stone surrounds. Above the entrance, there is a tripartite window that has been partly blocked. The extension features similar sash windows, along with flanking ground-floor lancets.
The school extension includes a 20th-century door in an angle porch supported by a single Ionic column, with casement windows in alternate block surrounds topped with a keyed entablature. Inside, the hall has flat stone-mullioned windows, with similar windows above in a round-headed surround beneath a battlemented gable. The rear extensions of the building are noted as being of no particular interest.
