Description

Doucecroft School is a house that has been converted into a special school. It dates from the late 18th century and has 19th and 20th-century extensions. The building is primarily made of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with the rear sections being timber framed and plastered. The roof is covered with handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the building faces southeast and features two rear stacks. There is an original service wing at the back of the left end, with a 19th-century extension beyond it. A single-storey flat-roofed extension was added in the 20th century, and a single-storey lean-to extension at the left end was rebuilt in 1986.

The building is two storeys high and has a five-window range of sash windows, each with 12 lights, and gauged brick arches. There are two blind apertures on each floor, with two of the first-floor windows having segmental heads in segmental arches, while the others have flat tops. The entrance features a six-panel door set in a portico supported by two columns and two pilasters, which are fluted above mid-height. A plain band runs along the front elevation. The front also has a plaster moulded cornice with bracketed corbels and a plain parapet, which is also present on both sides of the main range. The roof is hipped, and there is a Venetian window at the rear that lights the staircase. Inside, the original staircase features a wreathed handrail, slender turned balusters, and scrolled tread-ends, along with original folding shutters.
