Description

No. 175 (T.C. News) is a house that has been converted into a shop and residence. It dates back to the late medieval period and has undergone alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed, covered in roughcast and plaster, and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles.

The structure features a 2-bay crosswing on the left, which is part of a hall house, and a 3-bay wing at the rear. There is an 18th-century extension to the right of the crosswing, which includes a stack in the rear right corner and a 2-bay wing behind it, along with a 20th-century extension in painted brick beyond. The overall layout is rectangular, with two storeys and a single-storey rear right wing that has attics.

On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century shopfront with a central glazed door. The first floor has two 20th-century casement windows. The right gable reveals the ends of the rear wallplate and two side purlins, with the roof raised approximately 0.30 metres above. The rear right wing has a gambrel roof, and the chimney is cement-rendered.

The crosswing features an underbuilt jetty and a binding beam, both plastered. Inside the shop, most of the right wall of the crosswing has been removed except for one main post, which is plastered. The rear wing contains two transverse beams that are chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. On the first floor of the crosswing, two jowled posts are exposed, while the rest of the frame is concealed. The roof has been rebuilt to align with the street.
