Description
The Kildare Hotel is a hotel dated 1887, as indicated by the lead rainwater heads. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and features a string course and cornice. The roof is made of graduated greenslate with coped gables and ball finials, and there are ashlar chimney stacks. The building has three storeys, two bays, and a cellar. The entrance includes a panelled door set under a recessed segmental arch within a round-headed surround, which has a pilastered doorcase and a dentilled cornice. Above the entrance, there is a console bracketed balcony with decorative wrought-iron railings beneath a large French window. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay window with glazing bars. The decorative stonework parapet is located under a three-light gabled dormer window, with a similar window to the right. The hotel was a private establishment until it was taken over by the Central Control Board in 1916 and was returned to private ownership in 1973. It is situated in a prominent location opposite the parish church and is listed partly for group value with that church.
