Description
The Library Block at Nelson Thomlinson School is a Grade II listed building located on Longmoor Lane in Wigton. Originally a grammar school, it now serves as the library block of a comprehensive school. The building is dated and inscribed above the entrance with "NELSON SCHOOL WIGTON FOUNDED AD 1896" along with a coat of arms, and is likely designed by C.J. Ferguson.
Constructed from red sandstone ashlar, the building features a steeply pitched roof made of graduated greenslate, complete with coped gables and a square stone chimney stack. Atop the structure is a square wooden cupola with a pointed spire and lucarnes. The large, two-storey building is arranged in a U-shape and includes a prominent off-centre canted bay window with stone mullions and leaded panes, which projects above the eaves and is topped with a shaped parapet.
To the left of the bay window, the entrance is framed by a stone architrave. The facade is further enhanced by additional large stone-mullioned windows with leaded panes. A projecting two-storey gabled extension on the left mirrors the window style, while a lower gabled extension on the right features a porch with the inscription and date. There are also contemporary gabled extensions to the right, which include stone-mullioned windows. The 20th-century extensions are considered to be of no interest.
