Description

The Old School is a former school building dating from the mid-19th century, located on Church Street in Scawby. It was originally built in 1854 for Sir John Nelthorpe, and extended in 1876 and with a rear service addition in 1890.

The building is constructed of red brick with yellow brick and sandstone ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The original plan comprised a single-classroom block to the right, with a further single-classroom addition to the left in 1876, and service extensions at the rear dated 1890. The front of the building features a symmetrical design with two gables, incorporating two windows. It has a plinth and quoins. Projecting entrances with four-centred arches lead to board doors, each with ornate iron escutcheons set within chamfered wooden frames and surrounded by yellow brick detailing with corbelled kneelers and ashlar-coped gables. Tall, four-centred arch, three-light windows feature moulded wooden mullions and glazing bars, set within chamfered yellow brick surrounds and chamfered red brick sills. Tumbled-in brick is visible to the raised gables, which also have shaped kneelers. Rectangular ashlar tablets beneath hood-moulds are set into the gables, bearing the Nelthorpe arms, crest, and motto in relief. A central axial stack is present, along with smaller single ventilators on the classroom gables. The roof features fish-scale slates on the right and centre, and plain slates to the left. The right return has three three-light mullioned windows in segmental arched yellow brick reveals; the left return has two similar windows in plain surrounds. The building is included for group value.
