Description

The Forge House and Joiner's House is a building that has been converted into two houses. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and has undergone some alterations and extensions in the 19th century, specifically at the rear. Originally built for the Nelthorpe Estate, the structure is made of coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings and stacks, while the upper section of the left gable end is also brick. The building was formerly colour-washed throughout, and there are brick additions at the rear. It features a pantile roof.

The layout consists of three rooms at the front with a lobby entrance to the right of the center and a later entrance hall to the left. There is a contemporary outshut with a later wing to the rear right and another later addition with a rear wing to the rear left. The building is two storeys high and has three first-floor windows, with quoins visible on the first floor.

The front entrance includes a 20th-century half-glazed door to the right beneath a segmental arch, and a similar door to the left beneath an inserted soldier arch. To the right, there are two sash windows with margin lights, flush wooden architraves, sills, and segmental-headed brick surrounds, along with a broader sash window to the left. On the first floor, there are similar sash windows beneath lintels at eaves level. The building features a stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice and brick tumbling to the gables. The roof has a double span to the left and a catslide roof to the right, with an axial stack to the right of center and another stack to the rear left. The interior has not been investigated, and there are brick ranges adjoining to the rear that are of no special interest.
