Description

Linden Cottage and The Cottage are a pair of houses built in the mid-19th century for the Nelthorpe Estate. The front is constructed of brick in Flemish stretcher bond, with brick stacks, while the sides and rear are made of coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate.

The layout features a double-depth main range with two rooms at the front, flanked by entrance halls and single-room wings. The central range is two storeys high with two first-floor windows, and it is flanked by single-storey wings, each with one window. The houses have a plinth and projecting gabled porches that feature chamfered rubbed-brick four-centred arch entrances at the front, with blind chamfered square-headed openings on the sides. The porches have ornate bargeboards with drop finials.

Linden Cottage has a six-beaded-panel door on the left with central glazed panels, while The Cottage has a six-panel door on the right beneath a four-pane overlight in an architrave. The wings have 16-pane sliding sash windows with sills and hood-moulds, and the main range has three-light sliding sash windows with glazing bars, sills, and hood-moulds. The first-floor windows are similar but slightly smaller.

The main range features a large central axial corniced stack with four clustered diamond-shafted chimneys, corniced end stacks on the wings with single diamond-shafted chimneys, and a lateral stack at the rear with a pair of shafts.
