Description
Linden Cottage, Moorland Cottage, and Moorland View are a row of three cottages located in North Bovey, dating from the 18th century, possibly incorporating some earlier materials, with a date stone indicating 1705. The cottages feature granite rubble walls that are rendered on the front and sides, and each has a thatched roof with gable ends. There are four chimney stacks, all with brick shafts, with the centre right stack being an addition to a granite capped stack.
The original layout of the cottages has been obscured by later alterations, but they likely all had two main rooms, with one or both being heated. They are two-storey structures. Linden Cottage, on the left, has a symmetrical two-window front with a central doorway. The first-floor window on the left is a five-light cantilevered bay, while the other three windows are late 19th or early 20th century three-light casements with glazing bars. The first-floor right window features three small lights above. The front door, made of planks, is set within a rendered stone gabled thatched porch, which has seats on either side, likely from the 19th century.
Moorland Cottage, in the centre, has an asymmetrical two-window front, with a significant change in the wall angle about two-thirds of the way along to the right, where it also projects forward. Most windows are late 19th or early 20th century casements with glazing bars, except for a very small single light on the ground floor right in the projecting section. It has a similar porch to Linden Cottage, but without seats, and a 20th-century plank door.
Moorland View, on the right, features an almost symmetrical two-window front with three-light late 19th or early 20th century casements, except for the first-floor left window, which is a two-light. It has a porch similar to the adjoining cottages, positioned to the left of centre. Beneath the first-floor right window is the date stone marked R.E. 1705. The rear of the cottages has irregular windows and doors, with each cottage door having a projecting porch hood above. The interior and roof space have not been inspected.
