Description

A row of three cottages, known as The Old Post Office, Ivy Cottage, and Ingrik, is situated at the south-east corner of the green in North Bovey. The left-hand end of Ingrik is a later extension dating to the 18th century. The cottages are built of rendered granite rubble, with two squat granite rubble chimney stacks on the right-hand gable end, featuring a drip course near the top. The central and left-hand chimneys are rendered with brick shafts at the top. The three right-hand cottages have thatched gable roofs, while the extension has a slate roof and the attached outbuilding has a pantile roof.

The original plan is uncertain but likely comprised a row of three cottages. The right-hand cottage, The Old Post Office, is larger than the others and originally featured direct entry and two heated rooms. The other cottages probably also had direct entry, with one heated and one unheated room. Outshuts have been added to the rear.

The Old Post Office has a three-window asymmetrical front, with 20th-century 2- and 3-light casement windows, except for a large single-light window on the ground floor right. All windows have glazing bars. A 20th-century mock Tudor door is located to the right of centre, set within an open-fronted rendered porch with a gabled thatched roof. Ivy Cottage has a two-window asymmetrical front with 20th-century casement windows and glazing bars. A wide, possibly 18th-century rendered stone porch with a gabled thatched roof is positioned to the left of centre, likely containing a chamfered wooden doorframe with a heavy studded plank door and strap hinges, potentially original. Ingrik has a two-window asymmetrical front, with a single-storey outbuilding attached at the far left and a one-window extension on the left. It also contains 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars, and a rendered stone porch with a thatched gable roof to the left of the original cottage, with a probably 18th-century doorframe and contemporary plank door.

The interior of The Old Post Office shows an open fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel with run-out stops. The interior of the other cottages and roof structures were not inspected.
