GV II

Smithy. Mid - late C18 with C20 stack and alterations to rear gable end. For Nelthorpe Estate. Roughly-coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings and stack. Pantile roof. Rectangular on plan: 2 rooms with outshut to rear right; gable-end to street. Single storey, one window to side. Original entrance to front gable end. Quoins. Street front has twin elliptical arches on brick piers with ashlar impost bands and projecting keystones: board door to right, window to left with vertical glazing bars and board shutters in recessed brick blocking. Brick tumbling to gable; pair of iron tie-bar ends. Left return, alongside Park Lane, has 2-light sliding casement with vertical glazing bars and pair of board shutters, stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice, small C20 stack above. Right return has 2-fold board door beneath timber lintel. Rear has C20 door beneath rebuilt gable. Interior contains 2 hearths, one stone-built and probably original, the other C20, of brick. An early and largely unaltered estate smithy.
