Description

The Forge is a smithy built in the mid to late 18th century, with a 20th-century stack and some alterations to the rear gable end. It was constructed for the Nelthorpe Estate and features roughly-coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings and a pantile roof. The building has a rectangular plan with two rooms and an outshut to the rear right, and it is single storey with one window on the side. The original entrance is located at the front gable end.

The street-facing side has twin elliptical arches supported by brick piers, with ashlar impost bands and projecting keystones. To the right of the arches is a board door, and to the left is a window with vertical glazing bars and board shutters set in recessed brick blocking. The gable displays brick tumbling and a pair of iron tie-bar ends. The left return, which faces Park Lane, features a 2-light sliding casement window with vertical glazing bars and a pair of board shutters, along with a stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice and a small 20th-century stack above. The right return has a two-fold board door beneath a timber lintel, while the rear has a 20th-century door beneath a rebuilt gable.

Inside, there are two hearths: one is stone-built and likely original, while the other is a 20th-century brick hearth. The Forge is noted as an early and largely unaltered estate smithy.
