Description

This milestone, located opposite Accrington Terrace in Wigton, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was erected for the Carlisle-Cockermouth Turnpike. It is made of whitewashed red sandstone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a rounded top and a curved face, with a plate on the front displaying raised letters that read "CARLISLE 11 MILES, WIGTON, COCKERMOUTH 15½ MILES." The lettering is highlighted in black.
