Description
This is a late 18th-century farmhouse, incorporating elements from the mid-17th century and with early 19th-century alterations and additions. The farmhouse is built with incised stucco walls, featuring an eaves cornice, angle pilasters, and a chamfered plinth. It has a graduated greenslate roof and stone chimney stacks. The original part of the house has two bays, with a two-bay extension to the left, all under a common roof. The front of the farmhouse features a six-panel door set in a painted stone surround, topped with a segmental broken pediment. Double-sash windows are set within painted stone architraves. The extension has a six-panel door with a pediment, and sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds.
Inside, the ground floor has a beamed ceiling, a firebeam, and a partition known as a "heck." A built-in cupboard in a rear passage contains carved timbers dated 1661, which appear to be reused. A section of the rear wall in this passage is made of clay, and is thought to be the original rear wall of the farmhouse. The house was formerly the home of the Thompson family, with J & S Thompson residing there in 1774. A free-standing court cupboard, inscribed and dated 1694 (Wilson), was acquired by the current owner and likely arrived when a Wilson joined the Thompson family. Other datestones found in the house do not relate to this building. An adjoining extension and byre to the right are not considered to be of historic interest.
